Firstrade Overview
Firstrade stands out as an attractive discount broker, offering all the standard bells and
whistles that you’d want and expect from a broker. In this article, we’ll provide an overview of
Firstrade’s brokerage account, along with its features and costs.
What Can I Trade?
Firstrade offers a surprising amount of investment choices for those looking to build a diversified
portfolio with a discount broker. You can easily trade stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds, bonds,
CDs, and Treasuries on Firstrade’s platform.
Pricing
Stocks and ETFs are now $0 per trade.
Mutual fund trades will incur a flat commission of $0 - the lowest rate in the industry.
Bonds trades will cost you $1 per bond (par = 1,000) with a minimum and maximum of $10 and $250
respectively per trade. Certificates of deposit (CD) cost $24.95 and Treasuries trades are
commission-free.
Account Fees and Minimums
Firstrade doesn’t charge any account maintenance fees or require you to maintain any minimum balance
to keep your account open. That said, if you are interested in a margin account, there is an
industry-mandated minimum balance requirement of $2,000. Investors who use margin are also subject to
borrowing fees, which at Firstrade start at a rate of 13%
and gradually drops to 9% as the amount borrowed
increases towards $1,000,000.
Investing Platform
Firstrade offers investors the convenience of placing trades and monitoring their portfolio both on the broker’s desktop and browser-based platforms as well as their mobile app, which is compatible on Apple and Android devices. Understandably, their web browser is the most aesthetically pleasing interface to trade on, with its interactive charting and live market headlines, but the mobile app serves its purpose as well with basic charts and real-time quotes allowing you to trade confidently on the go. Firstrade’s website is the best place to do your investment research though.
Customer Service
Firstrade’s customer service is pretty impressive for a discount broker. They have a customer support
phone line that is staffed 7am-10pm ET, 7 days a week, and whenever we called in we were connected to a live agent very quickly. They also post an international phone number for those clients that find themselves frequently traveling outside of the U.S. Their website also has a self-help section and an on-line chat feature that is available for part of the day.
